He confessed to the police that he had rented a room in Duc Trong district with a plan to rob the bank and flee to Cambodia after suffering huge losses in his real estate business.

On Wednesday afternoon, Trung rode a motorbike to a VietinBank branch and used a gun to threaten the staff.

As he exited the bank with about VND3 billion ($123,200) in a backpack, he opened fire and injured the bank’s security guard when the latter and some locals attempted to stop him.

Hundreds of policemen were mobilized to track and stop the suspect at arterial roads in and out of Lam Dong province.

About 10 hours after the robbery, the suspect was surrounded, restrained and arrested while he was on the run, the police said.
