Hanoi eyes second int’l airport in Thuong Tin district

Hanoi authorities have selected Thuong Tin, a rural district 30 kilometers south of the city's center, to host the capital’s second international airport.

The district is seen as a suitable area since it will have little influence on air access to Noi Bai International Airport in the north of Hanoi. However, a specific location has not been disclosed.

Hanoi’s administration had earlier proposed a second airport in Ung Hoa district, also to the south. However, the weather in this area is not favorable and the direction would affect air access to Noi Bai airport, according to research findings.

Research on a second international airport for Hanoi would help avoid overload at Noi Bai airport. According to calculations, the number of passengers through Noi Bai by 2050 would be about 100 million, and expansions of the airport, if any, would be impossible to handle. Therefore, building a new airport must be considered.
