Vietnam leads Southeast Asia in e-commerce sales, with massive numbers of online purchases and monthly deliveries.

The country reached 104 points in terms of annual number of purchases, far ahead of the region's average index and Thailand, which held the second position, with 66 points and 75 points respectively, according to the E-commerce Southeast Asia Barometer 2021 report by logistics companies Ninja Van and DPD Group.

About 76% of Vietnamese survey respondents think that online shopping saves money, with the most purchased categories being fast-moving consumer goods, fashion, and shoes.

Vietnamese and Malaysian shoppers lead in terms of parcels received in a month, averaging 7.1, followed by Thailand and Indonesia with 6.8 and 6.5 respectively. The region's average is 6.5, according to the report.

The survey also found that delivery, the final stage of online shopping, has a significant influence on overall customer experience.

A total of 85% of Vietnamese respondents said it is important to know which delivery company will receive their parcel, while 26% of them rated free delivery as a key driver for buying online. The combination of innovative promos and free delivery has proven to be a successful tactic of e-commerce platforms.

Since Covid-19 first occurred in late 2019, 70 million people have become e-shoppers in Southeast Asia. The number is expected to climb to 380 million by 2026, the report added.

Ninja Van Group, a leading tech-enabled logistics company in Southeast Asia, and DPD Group released their first E-commerce Southeast Asia Barometer Report 2021 on April 11. The study was conducted in six countries, namely Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, with over 9,000 participants. It highlighted online shoppers’ buying habits and desired shopping experience, from purchase to delivery.

Ninja Van Group has delivered around 2 million parcels per day across Southeast Asia over the past 12 months, indicating massive regional growth.
