Vietnam’s VinFast Auto delivered 34,855 electric vehicles (EV) around the world in 2023, according to a filing with U.S.-based stock exchange Nasdaq.

The year’s total included 13,513 EVs delivered in the last quarter of 2023, up 35% over the previous quarter.

However, the number of deliveries in 2023 fell short of the target due to slow EV adaptation in some regions amid economic headwinds, VinFast said in a release.

From 2021 when it made its first delivery to end-2023, VinFast, the automaker under Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, delivered 42,291 EVs globally.

VinFast did not provide further details of its performance, only saying that the firm’s audited financial statements for 2023 will be announced on February 28.

Vietnam recorded sales of 301,989 vehicles in 2023, down 25% year-on-year, according to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association (VAMA), which does not include VinFast and Hyundai.

Outside VAMA, Hyundai reported sales of 67,450 units in 2023, according to a report by TC Group, the manufacturer and official retailer of Hyundai vehicles in Vietnam.
