Indonesia commenced the construction of a plant turning waste into alternative fuel (refuse-derived fuel or RDF) in Rorotan, North Jakarta, on Monday.

The facility is said to be one of the largest RDF development projects in the world.

Acting Jakarta Governor Heru Budi Hartono affirmed that this is part of the Jakarta government's efforts to control the waste problem and to make Jakarta a sustainable global city.

The budget to build the facility is more than Rp1.28 trillion ($79.5 million) sourced from the 2024 Regional Budget (APBD) of the Jakarta government. It is capable of processing 2,500 tonnes of waste, and producing 875 tonnes of products in the form of RDF or alternative fuel per day.

Heru added that Jakarta prioritises waste management within the city so that the burden on the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) is reduced.

The RDF plant is targeted for completion by the end of 2024 and can become operational in 2025 to support waste management from upstream to downstream within Jakarta.
