South Korea’s Doosan Enerbility and France-based HDF Energy have just taken new steps in the expanding renewables market in Vietnam, which targets carbon neutrality by 2050.
The Korean energy firm is joining hands with Korean and Vietnamese research institutes to fuel the adoption of ammonia co-fired power plants in Vietnam. Vietnam’s Institute of Energy (IE), Doosan Enerbility, and Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI) signed last Friday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Hanoi for the purpose.
Using a mixture of ammonia and other existing fuels of power plants has the effect of reducing carbon gas emissions. A compound of nitrogen and hydrogen, ammonia is a gas and is often used to make fertilizers.
Under the signed deal, the three sides will set up a consultative body to pursue the related tasks. IE will make a feasibility study on the implementation of ammonia co-firing technology. KETI will be in charge of modernizing power plants, while Doosan Enerbility will pursue the development of ammonia co-firing technology.
Doosan Enerbility has been successfully supplying power plant equipment to numerous local power plants in Vietnam since it established the large-scale manufacturing base Doosan Vina in 2009 in the central province of Quang Ngai, said Park Hong-ook, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group.
“With the signing of this MoU, the three parties will be doing their utmost to use eco-friendly technology to help Vietnam achieve the transition to clean energy,” he said.
Doosan Enerbility is the new name of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, established in March 2022.
The governments of Vietnam and South Korea announced on December 5 the two countries had upgraded their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of bilateral relations. As part of this, the two governments signed an MoU on comprehensive cooperation for the electric power generation sector, which included partnerships on offshore wind turbines and ammonia co-firing demonstrations.
France-headquartered HDF Energy has signed an MoU with Petrovietnam construction arm PTSC in co-developing hydrogen and renewable power plants in Vietnam. The two parties’ cooperation would go beyond Vietnam later for expansion in the Asia-Pacific region.
The partnership seeks to tap into Vietnam’s carbon neutrality target by 2050.
PTSC is a Vietnamese leading construction firm in developing oil and gas exploration structures as well as offshore wind projects.
HDF Energy entered Vietnam’s renewables market this July via a partnership with Saigon Asset Management Corp.
Under their cooperation deal, the two sides are joining hands to develop a chain of hydrogen and renewable energy projects in Vietnam.
