PV Gas, the gas production arm of state-owned Petrovietnam, has taken delivery of its third batch of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet demand for power generation as the country battles to cope with a prolonged heat wave.

The Hoegh Gandria LNG tanker carried nearly 60,000 tons of LNG from Malaysia to unload in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on Tuesday.

It was the second LNG delivery this year after nearly 70,000 tons arrived in early April.

The LNG will be provided for power plants run by state utility Vietnam Electricity (EVN), Power Generation JS Corporation 3 (EVNGENCO3), and several industrial clients in the region.

PV Gas is the first and only qualified LNG importer in Vietnam, with an LNG terminal and port operational since July 2023.

Due to the extreme heat, electricity demand hit a record high last month. The nation’s maximum capacity reached 47,670 MW on April 27, while output hit 993.97 million kWh on April 26, up 23.1% year-on-year.

National electricity output had jumped 11.2% year-on-year in the week ending April 28, according to the Electricity Regulatory Authority under the industry ministry.

To meet rising demand, the authority had to mobilize three LNG-fired power plants in Phu My town, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province and save water at hydropower plants in the northern region.

Output from gas power plants reached 91.1 million kWh per day last week, 13.1 million kWh higher than the daily plan set for April.
