TREA President Chookiat Ophaswongse said the impact of the floods on rice production was not clear yet, adding that the country’s most important rice plots in the Northeast have not been impacted by the floods.

According to Chookiat, this year’s rice production will reach around 33-34 million tonnes, higher than the 32 million tonnes last year.

He noted that water resources are crucial for rice cultivation next year, especially the Bhumibol Dam which is currently at 71% in water capacity.

Thailand exported 7 million tonnes of rice in the first nine months of 2024 and the figure is expected to further grow due to pending rice orders and India’s ban on export, the official said.
