Malaysia’s e-commerce revenue rises sharply

Malaysia’s e-commerce revenue for the first nine months of 2025 totalled MYR937.5 billion ($226.8 billion), up 1.9% compared to the same period in 2024, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the highest e-commerce revenue was recorded in the second quarter of 2025 at MYR313.8 billion, before declining slightly to MYR312.6 billion in the third quarter.

As the digital landscape evolves, e-commerce continues to play an important role in driving business activities, particularly in expanding market access and enhancing the competitiveness of the Malaysian economy.

Meanwhile, a report on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) usage and e-commerce by businesses in 2024 showed that digitalization is accelerating, with e-commerce income rising to MYR1.18 trillion in 2023, supported by growth in the manufacturing, services, construction and agriculture sectors.

These positive results are attributed to Malaysia’s robust digital ecosystem, with fixed and mobile broadband subscriptions reaching 49.2 million in 2025, alongside expanded 4G (98.8%) and 5G (82.4%) coverage.

Overall, the Malaysia Digital Economy 2025 report highlights the country’s significant progress in digital transformation, driven by the steady growth of the e-commerce sector, the expanding contribution of the ICT industry, increasing ICT adoption among businesses, households and individuals, and government efforts to upgrade national communications infrastructure.

The rapid development of mega-scale data centers, alongside the growing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), process automation, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud services and cybersecurity solutions, is also reinforcing Malaysia’s digital ecosystem.
