Binh Dinh speeds up survey for German-invested 2 GW offshore wind farm

Binh Dinh People's Committee has assigned local authorities to collaborate with German renewable energy company PNE AG in identifying the survey area for the firm's 2-gigawatt offshore wind project in the central province.

PNE AG was approved in principle by the committee in October 2020 to survey a sea area in Phu Cat and Phu My districts for the $6 billion project.

The German company wants to build the 2 GW project in three phases, with 700 MW by 2025, then another 700 MW by 2026, and the last 600 MW in 2027.

It needs to survey a sea area of 96,470 hectares that does not conflict with other approved development plans in the province.

According to the people's committee, the project is in line with Vietnam’s development strategy of renewable energy until 2030, with vision until 2050, approved by the Prime Minister.

The province has proposed the government adds this project to the national power development plan for the 2021-2030 period, with vision until 2045 (PDF VIII).

In a meeting with Binh Dinh leaders in mid April, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Dang Hoang An had said the ministry supported this project and would create conditions for it to be implemented as scheduled.

Binh Dinh province is now home to four operational wind power plants, all located in Nhon Hoi Economic Zone, namely the 26.4 MW Phuong Mai 1, 21 MW Phuong Mai 3, 30 MW Nhon Hoi 1, and 30 MW Nhon Hoi 2.
