Vietnam holds significant potential for developing bio-based packaging, thanks to its abundant natural resources, said Ngo Dac Thuan, chairman of IP Group JSC, which specializes in intellectual property and innovation.

Speaking at a recent event in Ho Chi Minh City titled “Compliance with sustainability regulations in consumption and export for food and packaging,” held last Thursday, Thuan emphasized that Vietnam has key advantages, including plentiful bio-based raw materials and competitive production costs.

However, he noted that the country still faces limitations in highly specialized human resources, research and development (R&D) investment, and infrastructure.

“To unlock the full potential of the bio-packaging industry, domestic companies need to increase investment in R&D, foster international cooperation in technology transfer and talent development, and attract skilled professionals.

“At the same time, it’s essential to build modern infrastructure - including 3D printing, biotechnology, nanomaterials, and automation - and leverage government support policies to cultivate a culture of innovation,” said Thuan.

Thuan added that globally, the demand for sustainable and eco-friendly packaging is on the rise, driven by growing consumer awareness and stricter regulations. Vietnam can position itself as a competitive player in the global market if it takes strategic action now.

In the food packaging industry specifically, interest is growing among investors, research organizations, and large enterprises. Emerging technologies being protected and implemented include materials such as polylactic acid (PLA), biodegradable films and packaging, molded pulp, water-soluble materials, and biodegradable additives.

Alan Nguyen, a representative from Eurofins Sac Ky Hai Dang, a major testing center in the field of testing and appraisal of food, pharmaceuticals, and fertilizers in Vietnam, provided insights into the stringent standards and regulations governing food contact materials (FCMs) in both the U.S. and European markets.

He warned that these technical barriers must be carefully addressed if Vietnamese companies aim for sustainable exports.

From a market strategy perspective, Paul Le, vice president of Central Retail Vietnam Group, stressed that businesses aiming to expand internationally must first establish a strong presence at home. He emphasized the importance of mastering market knowledge and being adaptable to a variety of international regulations, consumer preferences, and standards.
