Vietnam's parliament okays cutting number of provinces and cities from 63 to 34
The National Assembly, Vietnam's legislature, on Thursday passed a resolution that will reduce the country's number of provinces and cities from 63 to 34, effective immediately.

Accordingly, starting this year, Ha Giang province, located in the northernmost part of Vietnam, will be merged into Tuyen Quang to form Tuyen Quang province, which neighbors Cao Bang, Lao Cai, Phu Tho and Thai Nguyen provinces and borders China.
Yen Bai and Lao Cai will merge to form Lao Cai province, which borders Lai Chau, Phu Tho, Son La, Tuyen Quang provinces and China.
Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen will become one, named Thai Nguyen province, which neighbors Bac Ninh, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, and Hanoi.
Vinh Phuc, Hoa Binh and Phu Tho will be Phu Tho province bordering Lao Cai, Ninh Binh, Son La, Thai Nguyen, Thanh Hoa, Tuyen Quang, and Hanoi.
Bac Giang and Bac Ninh will be arranged into a new province called Bac Ninh, a neighbor of Hung Yen, Lang Son, Quang Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Hai Phong, and Hanoi.
Thai Binh and Hung Yen will merge to become Hung Yen province, which borders Bac Ninh, Ninh Binh, Hanoi, Hai Phong, and the East Sea.
Hai Phong and Hai Duong will form Hai Phong city neighboring Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Quang Ninh, and the East Sea.
A merger of Ha Nam, Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh will lead to the establishment of Ninh Binh province, which borders Hung Yen, Phu Tho, Thanh Hoa, Hanoi, and the East Sea.
Quang Tri will be formed by the merger of Quang Binh and Quang Tri. The new province borders Ha Tinh, Hue city, Laos, and the East Sea.
Da Nang and Quang Nam will form a new city called Da Nang, which is a neighbor of Quang Ngai and Hue and borders Laos and the East Sea
Kon Tum and Quang Ngai will merge to form Quang Ngai province, which borders Gia Lai, Da Nang, Laos, Cambodia, and the East Sea.
Binh Dinh and Gia Lai will be turned into Gia Lai province bordering Dak Lak, Quang Ngai, Cambodia, and the East Sea.
Ninh Thuan and Khanh Hoa will form Khanh Hoa province, which borders Dak Lak, Lam Dong, and the East Sea.
A merger of Dak Nong, Binh Thuan and Lam Dong will give birth to Lam Dong province, bordering Dak Lak, Dong Nai, Khanh Hoa, Ho Chi Minh City, Cambodia, and the East Sea.
Phu Yen and Dak Lak will become Dak Lak province bordering Gia Lai, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Cambodia, and the East Sea.
Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Binh Duong will form Ho Chi Minh City, which borders Dong Nai, Dong Thap, Lam Dong, Tay Ninh, and the East Sea.
Binh Phuoc and Dong Nai will merge to become Dong Nai province, which neighbors Lam Dong, Tay Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City, and Cambodia.
Long An and Tay Ninh will form Tay Ninh province bordering Dong Nai, Dong Thap, Ho Chi Minh City, and Cambodia.
A merger of Can Tho, Soc Trang and Hau Giang will lead to the formation of a new city called Can Tho, a neighbor of An Giang, Dong Thap, Ca Mau, Vinh Long, and the East Sea.
Ben Tre, Tra Vinh and Vinh Long will merge to establish Vinh Long province, which borders Dong Thap, Can Tho, and the East Sea.
Tien Giang and Dong Thap will turn themselves into Dong Thap province, which neighbors An Giang, Tay Ninh, Vinh Long, Can Tho, Ho Chi Minh City, Cambodia, and the East Sea.
Bac Lieu and Ca Mau will become Ca Mau province bordering An Giang, Can Tho, and the East Sea.
Kien Giang and An Giang will merge to form An Giang province, which borders Ca Mau, Dong Thap, Can Tho, Cambodia, and the East Sea.
Eleven provinces and cities that are not subject to any merger are Cao Bang, Dien Bien, Ha Tinh, Lai Chau, Lang Son, Nghe An, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Son La, Hanoi, and Hue.
