Work starts on $620 mln port project in central Vietnam province Dak Lak
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Tuesday for the VND16.3 trillion ($620 million) Bai Goc Port project in Dak Lak province - home to a long coastline and a hub of coffee production.
The project, to be developed by Bai Goc Phu Yen Port JSC, will cover 306.91 hectares in Phuoc Tan village, Hoa Xuan commune. Once completed, the deep-water port will be capable of receiving vessels of up to 220,000 DWT.
Bai Goc Port is designed to support cargo and equipment handling for the Hoa Tam Industrial Zone and related port logistics services.
Phu Yen and Dak Lak provinces were recently merged to form the new Dak Lak which borders Gia Lai, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Cambodia, and the East Sea.
The old Dak Lak is famous for its highland natural beauty, cultural richness, and coffee production, while the old Phu Yen boasts its diverse landscapes, including mountains, rivers, lagoons, and a long coastline.

The Bai Goc Port will be developed under two phases. Phase 1 will span 230.93 hectares and cost approximately VND8.8 trillion ($334.6 million).
This phase includes the construction of six wharves (No. 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, and 11) with a total berth length of 1,536 meters and a 1,634-meter breakwater, and dredging of access channels and turning basins to accommodate fully loaded 220,000 DWT vessels.
This phase is expected to complete legal procedures by Q1/2026 and commence operations by Q3/2028, with a design capacity of 15.6 million tons per year.
Phase 2, covering 75.98 hectares, will add six more wharves (No. 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, and 12A), extending the berth line by 1,610 meters.
A second breakwater (536 meters) and further dredging works are planned to maintain navigational safety. This phase will add 11.1 million tons per year in capacity, bringing the port’s total to 26.7 million tons per year.
Legal procedures are expected to be completed by Q4/2028, with operations starting in Q4/2030.
