Famous Swiss watch brand copies Vietnamese artist's work
Swiss watch firm Christophe Claret has released a new model featuring the work of Vietnamese painter Xuan Lam.
“Christophe Claret thanks the artist Xuan Lam for allowing us to graciously use the original painting 'Hai Ba Trung',” the Swiss brand announced via its Instagram account on Tuesday.
Christophe Claret announces on July 4, 2023 that Xuan Lam has given permission for it to use his original painting "Hai Ba Trung".
Christophe Claret wanted to pay homage to the two Trung sisters, who were Vietnamese heroines, it wrote.
“Hai Ba Trung is featured on a Westminster flying tourbillon minute repeater provided with a 4 jaquemart automatons,” the Swiss firm added.
The miniature painting by Andre Martinez is part of the unique Legend timepiece collection, the brand said.
The Vietnamese artist told domestic newspapers the same day that lawyers from the two sides had worked to allow Christophe Claret to use his original painting.
Christophe Claret, on its Facebook account on May 26, unveiled the new watch, saying it wanted “to pay homage to the two sisters” and “the entirely handmade miniature painting by Andre Martinez”. This post did not mention the Vietnamese painter.
A graduate of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, Lam, 30, has received a Fulbright scholarship and is about to start a master’s program in the U.S. this fall. He was born in Hanoi and lives in the Vietnamese capital.
