The first turbine of the Vung Ang 1 thermal power plant in the central province of Ha Tinh is expected to resume operation late December after more than one year.

It was shut down in September 2021 because of technical problems that have prompted an overhaul of the turbine by hundreds of engineers with more than 10 domestic contractors as well as dozens of foreign experts.

The experts were working hard to complete the overhaul by December 31 as scheduled, said a company representative.

The Vung Ang 1 thermal power plant, invested in by the Ha Tinh Petrovietnam Power Company, a subsidiary of the Petrovietnam Power Corporation (PV Power), is the largest coal-fired power plant in the central region, consisting of two turbines with total capacity of 1,200 megawatts.

Nguyen Duy Minh, deputy director of the Ha Tinh Petrovietnam Power Company, said: “In order to resume the turbine’s operation as planned, the plant organized a contractor selection process and signed contracts with foreign contractors including Toshiba of Japan for supply of materials and Sulzer of Indonesia for implementing the troubleshooting plan.”

Located in Ha Tinh province’s Ky Anh town, the power plant had an initial investment capital of VND22.25 trillion ($976.8 million), which was raised to VND33.57 trillion ($1.47 billion) by April 2016.

Construction began in August 2009 and the first and second turbines were put into operation in December 2014 and May 2015, respectively.
