Medical textile firm Watakyu opens $33 mln plant in southern Vietnam

Watakyu Vietnam, a textile product supplier for the healthcare industry, inaugurated Friday a $33 million factory in the southern province of Dong Nai.

The inaugural ceremony for the facility at Amata Industrial Park in Dong Nai was held about a year after construction began early June 2023.

The company is a joint investment by Japanese giants Itochu Corporation and Watakyu Seimoa Corporation and Vietnamese conglomerate Phu Thai Holdings.

The two-hectare facility is Dong Nai is Watakyu’s 66th factory in the world, providing laundry and disinfection services for textile products.

Dong Nai currently has 32 industrial parks that have so far attracted 1,483 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects with registered capital of $30.34 billion.

The province is home to large garment and footwear companies that are contract producers for international brands like Nike, Adidas, and Puma. The province attracted a total of $834 million in FDI in the first five months of this year, 19% above its annual target.

Japan is the second-biggest FDI source for Dong Nai province with 267 projects and a total registered capital of $5.2 billion, focused mainly in electronics, electrical items and supporting industries. Japanese investments in the province employ about 61,200 local people.
