Mekong Delta hub Can Tho has new Party chief

Deputy Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City's Party Committee Nguyen Van Hieu was appointed by the Politburo, the Party's premier decision-making body, as Secretary of the Party Committee of Can Tho, one of the five centrally-managed cities in Vietnam, for the 2020-2025 term.

Hieu, 47, replaced Le Quang Manh, who had been elected by the National Assembly as Chairman of the legislative body's Finance-Budget Committee.

Born in the south-central province of Binh Dinh, Hieu has master's degree in education management and bachelor's degree in laws. In January 2016, he was elected as an alternate member of the Party Central Committee.

He once held positions like Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union, Secretary of the Party Committee of HCMC's District 2, Chairman of the Inspection Board of the HCMC Party Committee, and Secretary of the Party Committee of HCMC's District 5.

In January 2021, Hieu was appointed Secretary of Thu Duc city's Party Committee for the 2020-2025 term. In June 2022, he was elected as Deputy Secretary of the HCMC Party Committee for the 2020-2025 term.

Can Tho is the largest urban area in the Mekong Delta and the delta's hub, with more than 1.2 million inhabitants. In the period 2015-2020, the locality achieved an average economic growth of 7.53% per year, with per capita income reaching VND97.2 million ($4,140). Its export turnover hit over $11 billion, an average annual increase of 19.75%.

In 2020-2025, the city set a target of 7.5-8% GRDP economic growth per year. Its per capita income is expected to reach VND145-160 million ($6,200-6,800) and the poverty rate to be brought down to less than 0.5% by 2025.
