Mekong province gives go-ahead to 100 MW solar farm survey

Vietnamese private firm Thien Tan JSC has received Hau Giang’s green light to make a survey on developing a 100-megawatt solar power farm in the Mekong Delta province, where a 20MW husk-to-power plant is under construction.

The survey is for building Vi Tan 1 and Vi Tan 2 solar plants, each with 50 MW and on a 50-hectare site in Vi Thanh town. The firm has 12 months for the study work and to make a project proposal, which would include a preliminary environmental assessment.

The People’s Committee of Hau Giang has assigned the provincial department of industry and trade, department of planning and investment, as well as officials in the town to support Thien Tan JSC in the survey process.

Formed in 2000 and headquartered in the central province of Quang Ngai, Thien Tan operates in building roads, urban areas, and electricity generation projects. It is operating two solar farms, the 19.2MW Mo Duc in Quang Ngai and the 50MW Thien Tan Solar in Ninh Thuan province in south-central Vietnam.

In hydropower, Thien Tan JSC has two electricity plants, Ha Nang and Dakre, both in Quang Ngai.

Meanwhile, in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang, Hau Giang Bioenergy JSC broke ground for its 20MW husk-to-power plant with an investment of VND875 billion ($37.2 million) in mid-December.

The 11-hectare biomass power plant is scheduled for completion and operation in the fourth quarter of 2024, annually providing 125 gigawatts-hour of electricity. The project would annually use about 110,000 tons of husk from rice in the delta, Vietnam’s rice bowl.
