Construction of Quang Tri Airport in the eponymous central province is set to start in the fourth quarter.

Construction of Quang Tri Airport in the eponymous central province is set to start in the fourth quarter.

Quang Tri Chairman Vo Van Hung confirmed this during a working session held Monday on the feasibility study done for the project.

The feasibility study was conducted T&T Group, a private conglomerate that has carried out research and feasibility studies for other projects in the province.

The airport, located in Gio Quang and Gio Mai communes, Gio Linh district, will have a designed capacity of one million passengers and 3,100 tons of goods per year by 2030; 2.2 million passengers in 2046.

Investment for the project is estimated at VND5,822 billion ($249 million) - VND2,913 billion for phase 1 and VND2,909 billion for phase 2.

Other investments proposed by T&T Group in the province were also discussed during the session, including the Gio Hai tourism complex in the eponymous district, a tourism-golf-urban area complex in Cam Lo district, and the Cua Viet tourism complex in Gio Linh district.

Vietnam has 22 airports in operation now, including 12 in the central region. Quang Binh and Thua Thien Hue provinces, which border Quang Tri, are home to the Dong Hoi and Phu Bai airports, respectively.

In 2021, the Ministry of Transport had asked relevant authorities to review the airport plan because of the Quang Tri airport’s proximity to both Dong Hoi (93km) and Phu Bai (88km) airports. Some experts warned that such proximity may lead to inefficiency and waste.
