PV Gas, a subsidiary of state-owned Petrovietnam, has taken delivery of the fifth LNG batch it has imported to feed gas-fired power stations in the country.

The delivery has been taken amidst concerns over summer power shortages.

On Wednesday, tanker AMANI brought nearly 70,000 tons of LNG from Brunei, supplied by Petrochina International (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., to the LNG Thi Vai terminal in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

A PV Gas announcement also said that since the first delivery in July last year, it has so far imported over 300,000 tons of LNG, most of it going to power generators during the peak of this year’s dry season.

PV Gas is currently the first and sole LNG supplier in Vietnam. It inaugurated the LNG 1 MMTPA Thi Vai, built by a consortium of Samsung C&T and Petrovietnam Technical Services, in October 2023.

The company plans to develop new LNG products including energy packages for the LPG/CNG/LNG integrated business model and provide processed gas for petrochemical complexes.

It is also planning green energy products like hydrogen and ammonia, as also carbon capture and storage (CCS) from emission sources to facilitate Vietnam's energy transition.

Due to high temperatures across the country and accelerated economic activity, power demand has been rising steadily in tropical Vietnam.

Electricity consumption reached a record high of 1 billion kWh on May 28. Total electricity output hit 28.09 billion kWh in May, up 11.3% year-on-year, according to state utility EVN.

The output for January-May was 124.25 billion kWh, up 12.2% year-on-year. Of this, electricity generated from coal accounted for 59.5%, followed by hydropower (15.4%), gas-fired power (9%) and renewables (14.2%). Imported power accounted for 1.6% of the total.
