So tough a challenge from an unbreakable Vietnamese side prevented a second win for defending champions South Korea in their AFC U23 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2022 Group C campaign on Sunday.

Head coach Hwang Sun-hong did not want his Korean players to rest at Lokomotiv Stadium after beating Malaysia 4-1 on Thursday because another win would push the young Taeguk Warriors closer to the knock-out stage.

However, the junior Golden Stars under coach Gong Oh-kyun, a South Korean native, relentlessly played counter-attacks while brilliant saves by Vietnam’s backup keeper Quan Van Chuan and defense system led by captain Bui Hoang Viet Anh resulted in a scoreless first half.

Substitute striker Cho Young-wook, who scored twice for the Koreans on Thursday, fired for his side in the 63rd minute with a close-range low shot. However, defender Lee Jinyong got his yellow card not long after that and was dismissed.

Suddenly, Vietnam started to play totally aggressively. During the attacks, defender Vu Tien Long appeared inside the Korean box from nowhere in the 83rd minute, and his strong shot defeated keeper Dong-Min Go. Then the final whistle blew with the 1-1 draw.

The young Taeguk Warriors earned four points after two games, while Vietnam secured two from their two draws. On match day three Wednesday, Vietnam will take on Malaysia while the Koreans will play Thailand at the same time to identify the two teams qualified for the knock-out stage.
