Vietnam’s first LNG power plant to connect to national grid on Feb 5
Nhon Trach 3, part of Vietnam’s first LNG-fired power project Nhon Trach 3 & 4, is set to connect to the national grid on Wednesday, February 5, according to PV Power, the project investor.
PV Power made the statement at a working session with Dong Nai province authorities on Monday, the first working day after the Lunar New Year holiday (Tet).
As of end January, the project has reached 96% completion, including its "first-fire" in early January, PV Power added.
After connection to the national grid, Nhon Trach 3 is ready to start commercial operation from July 2025, PV Power stated.
Meanwhile, Nhon Trach 4 is scheduled to enter commercial operation from October 2025.
PV Power is the main investor of the 1,600 MW, $1.4 billion Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 complex in the southern province of Dong Nai. It is expected to provide nine billion kWh of electricity to the national grid annually.
In October 2024, PV Power, a subsidiary of state-owned Petrovietnam, signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with a state utility Vietnam Electricity (EVN) subsidiary for the output of Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 power plants.
Vietnam is yet to have a power plant that exclusively uses LNG as fuel. Some gas-fired power plants like Phu My 3, Phu My 2.1, and Phu My 4 switched to using LNG as fuel on some occasions in 2024.
