Vietnam’s two-month vehicle sales climb 29%

Sales of vehicles on the Vietnamese market reached 65,634 units in the first two months of the year, up 29% year-on-year.
The figure includes the total sales of Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) members (50,776 vehicles), TC Motor (selling Hyundai, 11,601) and VinFast (3,257).
In February, due to the nine-day New Year holiday (Tet), the sales of the trio all dropped. VAMA sold 21,000 vehicles, and the tally for TC Motor and VinFast was 4,173 and 1,154, respectively.
The decrease in February was offset by the sales in January when the 50% reduction in registration fees for domestically assembed vehicles came into force and more people bought cars for Tet.
While the majority of vehicle manufacturers and assemblers recorded sale growth, VinFast and Ford posted a decline. The two companies largely attributed the lack of parts and components to their performance.
Only 230 Ranger pickup trucks, which made for a half of Ford’s sales, were delivered to customers in February. This is the first time in many years Ranger lost its best selling position in the segment to Mitsubishi Triton.
Only 679 VinFast Fadil cars, which were once the best selling model in Vietnam, were sold in February, down 50% against January. This VinFast fall to the seventh position among the best selling car makers, from the previous third position.
VAMA members like Toyota, Honda, Kia, Mazda, Suzuki and Mitsubishi all recorded sale growth in the two months. The three top positions in terms of sales remained unchanged, with Hyundai coming first with 11,601 units, followed by Toyota with 10,656 and Kia with 10,557.
In terms of cars, Toyota (excluding Lexus) recorded the biggest sale, 10,643 vehicles, slightly higher than Hyundai with 443 units.
