Quang Binh province in central Vietnam inaugurated a $44 million Korean-backed solar power plant on Sunday, with a capacity of 49.5 megawatts-peak.

The project in Le Thuy district is part of the Dohwa Le Thuy renewable energy complex, with South Korea's Dohwa Group being the investor.

Construction began in June 2020 and finished in December of the same year, behind the schedule owing to Covid-19 outbreaks in Vietnam and floods in the area during the time of construction.

After one year of operation, the plant's total electricity generating output exceeded 60,000 megawatts-hour.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Tran Thang, Chairman of the province People's Committee, said the event was a significant milestone for Quang Binh.

Dohwa Group has also invested in the Quang Binh Energy Tablets Factory project at Hon La Seaport Industrial Park, in addition to the Dohwa Le Thuy renewable energy complex.

Vietnam's solar energy potential is estimated between 60 and 100 GWh per year. Ninh Thuan province in south-central Vietnam has the highest potential for solar power generation, others include Binh Thuan, Daklak, and Khanh Hoa provinces. Quang Binh is expected to become a regional power hub in central Vietnam.
