American energy company AES Corporation will continue its mega offshore wind power project in Binh Thuan province and is committed to helping Vietnam fulfill its net-zero emission goal by 2050, said executive vice president Bernerd Da Santos.

Santos, also AES's chief operating officer, made the statement at a Thursday meeting in Hanoi with state utility Vietnam Electricity (EVN) CEO Tran Dinh Nhan. He added that AES is working with EVN Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) to complete a feasibility study for a battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Phu Quy island, also in Binh Thuan province.

In reply, Nhan affirmed EVN is willing to cooperate with AES on sustainable energy projects in Vietnam, like offshore wind power and BESS.

The previous day, the AES executive met with authorities of Binh Thuan to check the progress of the company's Son My II power plant and Son My LNG terminal projects.

Binh Thuan Chairman Doan Anh Dung urged AES to cooperate with relevant authorities to complete the remaining procedures for the Son My II power plant project and resolve any problems at the Son My LNG terminal project.

The Son My 2 power plant, LNG terminal, and a mega offshore wind farm are three projects being run by AES in Binh Thuan province. It officially received in-principle approval for its 2.25-GW Son My 2 combined cycle gas turbine power plant on February 5. AES and Vietnam's PV Gas received an investment registration certificate for their $1.4 bln LNG terminal project in May 2022.

In July 2022, the firm submitted a letter of intent for the 4GW offshore wind farm worth $13 billion.

AES has been operating the 1,120MW BOT Mong Duong 2 coal-fired power plant in the northern province of Quang Ninh since 2015.
