Auditor General set to take over as new Hanoi chairman

The Politburo has recommended that State Auditor General Tran Sy Thanh assume charge as the new mayor of Hanoi.

The Party's premier decision making body also appointed Thanh as the deputy chief of the Hanoi Party Committee.

The decision to recommend Thanh as top executive of the capital city was taken 38 days after former Hanoi Chairman Chu Ngoc Anh was arrested for his involvement in a Covid-19 test kit scam.

Thanh will take over his new position after the Politburo recommendation is ratified by the Hanoi People’ Council, the municipal legislature, which will vote on the appointment.

Thanh, 51, holds a master's degree in economics and is a Party Central Committee member, tenures 12 and 13. He used to hold the positions of Deputy Chief of Office, Chief of Office, and Deputy General Director at the State Treasury under the Ministry of Finance.

From 2008, Thanh held various senior positions including: Vice Chairman of Dak Lak province; a Party Central Inspection Commission member; Party chief of Bac Giang province; Vice Chairman of the Central Inspection Committee; and Party chief of Lang Son province.

At the end of 2017, he became deputy chief of the Central Economic Commission and chairman of oil and gas group Petrovietnam. In August 2020, Thanh was appointed Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly Office. Since April 2021, he has been the State Auditor General.

Also Friday, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh announced the appointment of Dao Hong Lan, Party chief of the northern province of Bac Ninh, as acting Minister of Health.

Lan, 51, holds an economic master’s degree and is a member of the 13th Party Central Committee for the 2021-2026 term.

She used to work as a specialist at the Social Insurance Department under the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs and then the department’s deputy head. Later, she worked as Deputy Chief of Office, Chief of Office, and Deputy Minister of Labor.

On June 7, former Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long was arrested for involvement in the Covid test kit scandal.
