Auto sales in Vietnam fall 32% in Jan-Jun, Toyota Vios best seller in Jun

Vehicles sales by members of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association (VAMA), which does not include VinFast and Hyundai, dropped 32% year-on-year to 137,327 in the first half of this year.

They included 100,277 passenger cars, down 37% year-on-year; 35,851 commercial vehicles, down 11%; and 1,199 special-purpose vehicles, down 65%.

The number of completely knocked down (CKD) vehicles hit 77,584, down 37% year-on-year; and that of completely-built-up (CBU) units fell 25% to 59,743.

In June, VAMA’s vehicle sales decreased 5% year-on-year to 23,800. The figure was up 15% versus the previous month. They included 17,334 passenger cars, 6,344 commercial vehicles, and 122 special-purpose vehicles.

Outside of VAMA, VinFast delivered 3,155 electric vehicles in June, including 609 VF 5 Plus, 1,007 VF e34, 1,184 VF 8, and 355 VF 9.

The Vietnamese electric vehicle start-up, under the Vingroup ecosystem, provided 11,638 units in the first six months of this year. VF e34 topped the chart with 5,072 units, followed by VF 8 with 4,555; VF 9 with 1,034; and VF 5 Plus with 977.

Hyundai reported sales of 28,011 units in January-June, up 62% year-on-year, according to a report by TC Group, the manufacturer and official retailer of Hyundai vehicles in Vietnam. Its June figure was 5,108, up 42.9% from April.

As a result, Hyundai was the best-selling brand in the first half of 2023 in Vietnam. Other top names were Toyota with 26,637, Ford (17,423), KIA (17,241), Mazda (14,089), Mitsubishi (12,847), and Honda (9,488).

Vietnamese conglomerate Thaco, known for manufacturing and selling vehicles like KIA, Mazda, Peugeot, BMW, and its own Thaco trucks and buses, recorded total sales of 41,607 in the period.

Regarding models, the Toyota Vios, a sedan, climbed to the top spot for June sales with 1,949 units. VF 8, the best-selling model in May, dropped to sixth place with 1,184. Other best-selling models in June were the Ford Ranger with 1,585; Hyundai Accent (1,539); Mitsubishi Xpander (1,283); and Mazda CX-5 (1,246).

Top of the chart for January-June were the Mitsubishi Xpander with 7,982; Ford Ranger (7,600); Hyundai Accent (7,452); Toyota Corolla Cross (6,341); and Toyota Vios (5,425).
