Binh Dinh province seeks approval for $6 bln offshore wind power farm

Binh Dinh authorities have proposed the Ministry of Industry and Trade to approve a 2,000 MW offshore wind farm project worth $6 billion in the south central province.

The project, invested by German wind farm developer PNE Group, will be implemented in three phases, set to be completed in 2025, 2026, and 2027 respectively. Of which, the first two phases have capacity of 700 MW each, while the last phase with 600 MW.

The total area of the survey, research, and supplementary proposal for the Binh Dinh offshore wind power plant is 96,470 ha, mainly on seawater surface, which does not overlap with the province’s approved construction plans.

The proposal is reportedly in line with Vietnam’s renewable energy development strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2050, as well as the country’s national energy development strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2045.

The provincial authorities have permitted PNE Group to survey, research, and install wind measuring poles, as well as assess wind potential in some marine areas in Phu Cat and Phu My districts. They also submitted documents to the government to have the project added to the country’s draft power development plan VIII for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2045.

This is a large-scale FDI project that will provide a significant output of electricity to the province and contribute to ensuring national energy security, leveraging advantages of local nature to develop renewable energy at sea in line with Vietnam's marine economy strategy and the global trend of using clean energy, said Dang Hoang An, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade.

Binh Dinh currently has four wind power projects producing 60 MW in Nhon Hoi Economic Zone, including the 26.4MW Phuong Mai 1 plant, the 21MW Phuong Mai 3 plant, the 30MW Nhon Hoi 1 plant, the 30MW Nhon Hoi 2 plant.
