Cai Mep is the only Vietnamese port involved in the Gemini Cooperation alliance formed between two major shipping lines, Denmark-based Maersk and Germany's Hapag-Lloyd.

The Gemini alliance, officially launched on February 1, is expected to consist of 340 vessels with a total capacity of 3.7 million TEUs by June 2025. It will boast 57 services, made up of 29 mainline routes and 28 inter-regional shuttles.

The inclusion of Cai Mep, a deep-water port in Vietnam’s southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, in the Gemini network is expected to enhance connectivity between the Cai Mep-Thi Vai seaport cluster and international shipping routes.

This development is anticipated to increase throughput and foster logistics cooperation, contributing to the growth of Vietnam’s maritime transport sector.

Cai Mep International Terminal Co., Ltd. (CMIT) was established on January 26, 2007, as a joint venture between Saigon Port, Vietnam Maritime Corporation (HoSE: VIMC), and Denmark’s port operator APM Terminals BV.

Cai Mep international port spans 48 hectares, featuring a 600-meter berth and a capacity of 1.1 million TEUs.

VIMC shares closed Tuesday at VND82,800 ($3.29) each, up 7.4% from the previous session.
