Ha Tinh authorities are proposing a 3,000 MW LNG-fired power plant project, Vung Ang 3, to be built in the central Vietnam province.

In a document sent to the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Prime Minister, Ha Tinh Chairman Vo Trong Hai wrote that the Vung Ang 3 aims to replace previously planned gas-fired power plants that missed their deadlines or were excluded from the National Power Development Plan VIII (PDP VIII).

The document highlights advantages for the project, including its proximity to the Son Duong deep-water seaport, the completion of site clearance for 164 hectares, and its connection to the national 500 kV power lines 1, 2, and 3.

Additionally, both the Vung Ang 3 LNG-fired power plant and an LNG terminal are already included in the province's master plan for 2030.

PV Power, an arm of state-owned Petrovietnam, is the major investor of the power project which can have a capacity of 1,500 MW until 2030 and 3,000 MW from 2030.

PV Gas, a sister firm of PV Power, is the investor of the Vung Ang LNG terminal project, also in Ha Tinh, with an annual capacity of 1-3 million tons.

The investors have conducted research and are ready to deploy the projects upon the Prime Minister’s approval, the document reads.

Ha Tinh province, an industrial hub in central Vietnam, is now home to Vung Ang 1 and Vung Ang 2 power plants. The 1,200 MW Vung Ang 1 coal-fired power factory entered operation in December 2014. The 1,200-MW Vung Ang 2 LNG-fired power plant is under construction and is set to enter official operation from June.
