Dai Nam JSC CEO arrested for livestreamed insults

General Director of Dai Nam Joint Stock Company, Nguyen Phuong Hang, is accused of making statements infringing upon the legitimate interests of organizations and individuals during her livestreams.

Hang, 50, was arrested by Ho Chi Minh City’s Investigative Police (PC01) on Thursday evening for “abusing freedom and democracy to infringe upon the interests of the state and the legitimate interests of organizations and individuals under Article 331 of the Penal Code.”

According to police, Hang took advantage of her influence to organize livestreams transmitting unverified information related to other people’s private lives. She used words that were “humiliating, insulting to the honor and dignity” of the people involved.

Hang was accused of being uncooperative during the probe, “disregarding the law”. She organized gatherings of people at the private homes of those she sought to insult, causing insecurity and disorder in Ho Chi Minh City and other localities.

Last month, the PC01 postponed any exit of Hang from the country until the end of April.

The arrest was made a long time after the investigative agency received denunciations from many individuals, saying Hang had displayed humiliating conduct.

Hang is known as a real estate tycoon in Vietnam. She is the wife of well-known businessman Huynh Uy Dung, nicknamed Dung “Lo Voi”.

Among those who denounced Hang was Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Ho Chi Minh City Law newspaper Nguyen Duc Hien. In his petition sent to the HCMC and Binh Duong Police, Hien said Hang committed the above violations, targeting him and many others personally. Hien proposed to prosecute Hang.

The incident related to Hien began in mid-2021, when he said Hang had made inappropriate statements on social networks in an interview with the VOV newspaper.

After the article was published, Hang repeatedly livestreamed on Facebook, Youtube, and TikTok, expressing her frustration with Hien.

The investigative agency also received a petition from singer Vy Oanh denouncing Hang at the end of last year. Oanh also proposed to prosecute Hang.
