Denmark’s integrated container logistics firm A.P. Moller-Maersk will build a major logistics center in Binh Duong province.

René Piil Pedersen, managing director at A.P. Moller Singapore Pte Ltd, made the statement at a Tuesday meeting with Binh Duong Vice Chairman Nguyen Van Danh. The firm aims to learn more about Binh Duong’s development path and industrial ecosystem to prepare for the investments and long-term operation.

Maersk entered Vietnam in 1991 and now employs over 1,300 people, the executive added. Besides, Maersk focuses on sustainable development and added value for society, the executive emphasized.

The firm now operates five warehouses in Binh Duong, covering 151,000 square meters in key logistics locations of the province. As many as 50% of those facilities use solar energy and apply energy-saving initiatives, such as energy-saving bulbs and economical use of lighting, water, and paper as warehouse materials.

Welcoming the investment, Danh asked relevant provincial agencies and departments to support the Danish firm. The southern province, also an industrial hub of Vietnam, is focusing on building a modern traffic system, developing an industrial ecosystem, improving urban areas, training a high-quality workforce, and ameliorating the investment environment.

Total freight transport in Vietnam reached more than 1.3 billion tons in the first seven months of this year, up 15.3% year-on-year, according to the General Statistics Office. Road traffic accounted for the biggest portion of 949.7 million tons, followed by the domestic waterways with 285 million tons. Sea transport, railway, and aviation’s figures were 66.1 million tons, 2.6 million tons, and 0.2 million tons, respectively.

Binh Duong’s figure in the period was 187.17 million tons, up 11.5% year-on-year, accounting for 14.4% of the country’s total.
