Digital technology - A catalyst for modernizing substations
The Long An Mobile Operation Team, a member of National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT), has actively implemented advanced scientific and technical solutions in the management and operation of substations.
This aims to realize the Politburo’s Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on the development of science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation, as well as the power sector's digital transformation strategy.
The primary goal is to gradually complete the model of unmanned substations, moving toward comprehensive automation and enhancing efficiency and reliability in power supply.
Currently, substations have been integrated into the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, allowing operators to remotely perform switching operations, monitor equipment status, track operating parameters, and receive real-time fault alerts - all from the central control center, eliminating the need for on-site presence.
Switchgear devices such as circuit breakers and disconnectors are remotely controlled, enabling rapid technical response and fault handling without delays caused by travel time.
A notable innovation has been the deployment of flycams with pre-programmed flight paths to inspect the entire substation area and internal equipment. They conduct scheduled surveys, capturing images and videos for equipment condition assessment without requiring personnel to physically access potentially hazardous or hard-to-reach areas.
This application of drone technology not only saves time but also improves inspection accuracy for outdoor equipment.

In parallel, sensors measuring temperature, humidity, and other environmental parameters have been installed at critical points such as transformers, medium-voltage switchgear, and busbars to collect real-time data and detect early signs of anomalies. This information is transmitted to analytical software to support timely alerts and minimize the risk of widespread failures.
Maintenance practices have also evolved with the adoption of condition-based maintenance (CBM) software, allowing servicing based on actual equipment data. This enhances maintenance efficiency, optimizes resources, and extends equipment lifespan. The team has also accelerated the digitization of all technical documentation, drawings, and operation logs, enabling faster access, more accurate operations, and better incident response.

Additionally, systems such as iStation (substation management), MDMS (Meter Data Management System), and PMIS (Power Management Information System) have been integrated to ensure seamless data connectivity for operations, inspections, and fault handling, making processes more unified, efficient, and responsive.
The team’s proactive adoption of new technologies and innovation efforts have not only improved operational performance but also laid a foundation for a modern, safe, and flexible power transmission system, moving closer to the vision of a smart grid and fully digital substations in the near future.
