EPC contract signed for O Mon IV thermal power project in southern Vietnam
An EPC contract signing ceremony for the O Mon IV thermal power project in Can Tho city took place on Friday, at the headquarters of state-owned Petrovietnam - the investor.
A consortium of South Korea's Doosan Enerbility Co., Ltd. and Vietnam's Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 2 (PECC2) has been selected as the EPC contractor via international open bidding.
The event marked an important milestone in Vietnam's roadmap to develop the Block B-O Mon power-gas project chain - a national key energy project.

The Block B-O Mon power-gas project chain includes component projects: offshore gas exploitation at Block B, Block B-O Mon gas pipeline, and a thermal power plant cluster in the southern city of Can Tho.
The project chain plays a strategic role in exploiting, transporting and effectively using gas resources in the southwestern region, contributing to ensuring national energy security and sea-island security and providing stable electricity for the southern region.
The implementation of the project chain has encountered many difficulties and challenges, leading to the overall progress being extended by nearly 20 years, according to the government's news portal.
The construction of gas-fired power plants (O Mon Power Center) - especially O Mon IV - is identified as a critical component project which is decisive to the feasibility and economic efficiency of the entire project chain, especially in the context that some component projects saw their EPC deployed two years earlier than O Mon IV.

O Mon IV is located at the O Mon Power Center in Phuoc Thoi ward, O Mon district. It will use the latest combined cycle gas turbine technology, ensuring high efficiency, fuel saving, environmental friendliness and having designed capacity of about 1,155 MW – higher than the planned scale.
It is expected to generate commercial electricity in December 2028, ensuring synchronization with the process of bringing gas from the Block B field to shore.
The project is line with the clean energy development orientation under Vietnam's Power Development Plan and will contribute to implementing the country's commitment at COP26 on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing sustainable and clean energy
Petrovietnam deputy general director Phan Tu Giang said that Petrovietnam had organized an open international bidding with the participation of many reputable, capable and experienced contractors. "The bidding ensured publicity, transparency, competition, and full compliance with the provisions of law," he told the signing ceremony.
On behalf of the EPC contractor consortium, Hyeonho Lee, CEO of Doosan Enerbility's Plant EPC Business Group, said that the Doosan-PECC2 consortium, which possesses experience of successfully implementing previous projects, is committed to completing O Mon IV on schedule and with best quality.
O Mon IV will raise the total power capacity that Petrovietnam manages and operates to more than 9,300 MW, accounting for about 10% of the total capacity of the national power system.
