Hanoi mini apartment fire kills at least 56
At least 56 people are dead and 37 injured after a mini apartment building fire in Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi on Tuesday, according to official data.
The fire broke out at 11:50 p.m. at No. 37, alley 29/70, Khuong Ha street, Khuong Dinh ward. The building covers an area of more than 200 square meters with about 150 people living there, mainly renters.
When the fire broke out, residents were preparing to go to bed. Some witnesses said the fire started in the motorbike parking area on the first floor. Seeing the fire and smoke, many people ran to the rooftop while others jumped onto the corrugated iron roof of the house next door.

The 10-floor building is located down a small alley and divided into 40 rooms. A firefighter said that it was impossible to determine the area of the site as well as the number of people present in the building when the fire broke out.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang and leaders and police from Hanoi and Thanh Xuan district were present at the scene and visited victims in the hospital.
