Duy had visited a bank branch on Tan Thanh street in HCMC’s Tan Phu district to transfer VND1.5 million ($61) into his personal account. However, a negligent bank clerk mistakenly transferred VND1.5 billion ($61,000) to his account.

When Duy returned home, he checked his account and saw a balance of VND1.5 billion. Despite knowing that the bank had made a mistake, he tried to appropriate the money by transferring VND50 million ($2,030) to a friend, asking the latter to withdraw it and give it back to him for spending.

After discovering the mistake, the bank carried out procedures to cancel the transaction, but could only recover VND1.45 billion. Duy was asked to visit the branch, informed of the mistake and requested to return the VND50 million, but he refused.

Since the amount could not be recovered, the bank filed a complaint with the police.
