The 98.3-kilometer Cam Lo-La Son Expressway linking two central provinces of Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue was inaugurated and opened to traffic on Saturday.

Construction of the VND7,669 billion ($324.5 million) expressway, a sub-project of the North-South Expressway eastern section in the 2017-2020 period, began on September 16, 2019.

The section in Quang Tri province is 37.3 kilometers long, while the part in Thua Thien-Hue is 61 kilometers.

"As one of the first completed projects of the North-South Expressway, the route will improve the country’s traffic infrastructure and socioeconomic growth," Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang said at the inauguration ceremony.

The road, which can reduce traffic pressure for National Highway 1A, initially has two lanes, with four lanes at some sections. It is set to expand to four lanes across all parts from 2030.

Of the 11 sub-projects of the 652-kilometer North-South Expressway eastern section in the 2017-2020 phase, the Cam Lo-La Son and the 15.2-kilometer Cao Bo-Mai Son that goes through the northern province of Ninh Binh are the only two completed.

The Cam Lo-La Son Expressway is set to connect to La Son-Tuy Loan Expressway and Danang-Quang Ngai Expressway.
