North-South expressway phase 2 construction to kick off on Jan 1

Twelve sub-projects of the North-South expressway phase 2 (2021-2025) are set to begin on January 1, according to Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang.

Construction on 12 sub-projects of the North-South Expressway phase 2 (2021-2025) are set to begin on January 1, Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang said Friday.

The projects are in the central provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh and Khanh Hoa, and the southern provinces of Can Tho, Hau Giang and Ca Mau.

Of the projects, nine have taken over 70% of land for construction and the remaining three less than 50%, according to the Ministry of Transport's Transport Construction Investment Management Authority. Overall, 65% of land has been handed over to the 12 projects.

The North-South Expressway eastern section phase 2, which is set for construction in 2021-2025 and open to traffic in 2026, has an investment of VND147 trillion ($6.17 billion) and a total length of 723.7 kilometers.

The main parts are Ha Tinh-Quang Tri (260.9 kilometers), Quang Ngai-Nha Trang (352.06 kilometers), and Can Tho-Ca Mau (110.9 kilometers).

The expressway will have six lanes, except for the Can Tho-Ca Mau route with only four. The total project area spans over 5,400 hectares.
