Construction on a 26.6-kilometer section of Ho Chi Minh City’s Ring Road 3 running through neighboring Binh Duong province started on Thursday.

The VND19.28 trillion ($817.9 million) section meets expressway standards with parallel roads on both sides. It is designed to have four lanes in the initial phase and eight lanes when fully completed.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Binh Duong Vice Chairman Mai Hung Dung said this is a very important project in the local socio-economic development plan. It is expected to ease the flow of vehicles entering major cities and open up development directions for many localities adjacent to HCMC, including Thu Dau Mot, Di An and Thuan An towns.

On June 18, work also began on the Ring Road 3 project's 47-kilometer section passing through Ho Chi Minh City and another, 11 kilometers, through Dong Nai.

Ring Road 3 will run 76.3 kilometers through HCMC and the provinces of Dong Nai, Binh Duong, and Long An. It is estimated to cost VND75.4 trillion ($3.2 billion) in all.

It will start at the intersection with Ben Luc-Long Thanh Expressway in Nhon Trach district, Dong Nai province, and end at the intersection with Ben Luc-Long Thanh Expressway in Ben Luc district, Long An province.

Once operational in 2026, the route will create a major breakthrough in traffic connection, thus promoting the southeastern region's socio-economic development.
