Nokia, Viettel deploy 1.2 Tb/s optics transmission in Vietnam, to help 5G growth
Finnish giant Nokia and Vietnamese telco Viettel have rolled out high-capacity optical network after achieving an optics transmission speed record of 1.2Tb a second per wavelength in Vietnam.
In a Thursday statement, Nokia said the deployment follows the successful trial of Nokia’s sixth-generation super-coherent Photonic Service Engines (PSE-6s) solution with Viettel.
The deployment, the first of its kind in Vietnam, is set to complete in 2025 and will connect Viettel’s data centers in key areas such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and the central city of Danang, enabling the service provider to increase capacity while enhancing energy efficiency.

Viettel will use the optical transport solution to cost-effectively address the ever-growing demand in Vietnam for 5G and Data Center Interconnect (DCI), consumer data consumption, and cross-border connectivity.
Nokia’s solution will enable Viettel to scale total network capacity to 38.4Tb/s over C-band, according to the statement.
Powered by Nokia’s PSE-6s, the new optical solution will allow Viettel to scale while ensuring superior network performance. Nokia’s solution will also help Viettel reduce network power consumption by up to 60%, the Finnish firm added.
In October, Viettel launched Vietnam’s first commercial 5G service, marking the event as a celebration of its 20th anniversary. The telco said it has installed over 6,500 base transceiver stations (BTS) to provide 5G services to all 63 localities in Vietnam, focusing in particular on tourism sites, seaports, airports, industrial parks, hospitals, and schools.
For business customers, it is providing 130 use case options for industrial production, smart city, logistics-transport, agriculture, healthcare, education, and energy sectors, integrated with cloud, artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.
