Northern Vietnam airport Gia Binh set to reshape capital region’s aviation network
Gia Binh International Airport, located in Bac Ninh province, is a strategic development that will reshape the capital region’s aviation network, said Minister of Construction Tran Hong Minh.
The model is similar to those in major cities such as London and Tokyo, the minister added in a presention to the National Assembly, the country's legislature, on Friday.
Gia Binh airport, about 40 km from central Hanoi, covers nearly 1,960 hectares across the communes of Gia Binh, Luong Tai, Nhan Thang, and Lam Thao.
It is designed to meet the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) 4F standard, capable of handling around 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo annually by 2030, and about 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo by 2050.
Total investment is about VND196.38 trillion ($7.45 billion), with VND141.24 trillion for phase 1 and VND55.14 trillion for phase 2, funded by investor equity and legally raised sources.

The project, approved in principle by the Politburo, is expected to help relieve the congestion at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi which is currently operating far above its designed capacity of 15 million passengers a year.
It will serve as one of the infrastructure projects supporting the 2027 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.
The government aims for Gia Binh to meet international standards; become a smart, green, and sustainable airport; support dual-use (military-civil) operations; offer five-star services, and rank among the world’s top 10 five-star airports per Skytrax.
Gia Binh is also expected to become the northern gateway for air travel, a hub for passenger and cargo transfer, and an aircraft maintenance base for the Asia-Pacific.
The airport will be fully integrated with national, regional, and provincial transport networks, with direct connections to Hanoi via expressways, urban rails, and national railways.
The legislature is set to discuss the project at a plenary session on December 5, with approval expected on December 11.
On August 19, the Ministry of Public Security broke ground on Gia Binh airport as part of 250 key projects launched or inaugurated nationwide to mark the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day (September 2).
A consortium involving an arm of leading real estate developer Sun Group intends to build part of a VND71.15 trillion ($2.7 billion) road connecting Hanoi to Gia Binh.
The consortium, comprising Cong Thanh Transport Construction Investment JSC and Sun Group’s subsidiary Cam Pha Sun Co., Ltd, has submitted an environmental assessment impact report for the development of a section of the road linking Hanoi to the airport.
