A consortium involving an arm of leading real estate developer Sun Group intends to build part of a VND71.15 trillion ($2.7 billion) road connecting Hanoi to Gia Binh, which is set to become the largest airport in northern Vietnam.

The consortium, comprising Cong Thanh Transport Construction Investment JSC and Sun Group’s subsidiary Cam Pha Sun Co., Ltd has submitted an environmental assessment impact report for the development of a section of the road linking Hanoi to the under-construction Gia Binh Airport in Bac Ninh province.

The 10-lane, 120-meter-wide road is designed to handle 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo annually by 2030.

The proposed section, which will run through Bac Ninh, is projected to cost VND47.6 trillion ($1.81 billion), including VND21.3 trillion ($808 million) for construction and VND14.2 trillion ($540 million) for land clearance and resettlement.

Once complete, the road will connect to Hanoi’s key transport arteries – Belt Roads 3 and 4, along with the Tu Lien and Tran Hung Dao bridges.

Construction is expected to take 15 months, with full operation scheduled for 2026 in line with the progress of Gia Binh airport development.

The project is positioned as a critical growth driver for northern Vietnam, easing chronic congestion at Noi Bai International Airport, which is currently operating far above its designed capacity of 15 million passengers a year.

On August 19, the Ministry of Public Security broke ground on Gia Binh airport as part of 250 key projects launched or inaugurated nationwide to mark the 80th Anniversary of Vietnam's National Day (September 2).

Covering nearly 1,960 hectares across the communes of Gia Binh, Luong Tai, Nhan Thang, and Lam Thao, the airport lies about 40 km from central Hanoi.

By 2030, the airport will have two runways, a passenger terminal, a VIP terminal, and supporting technical and logistics facilities, with a capacity of 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo annually.

Beyond 2030, expansion will continue with four runways, increasing capacity to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo per year.
