Vietnam's northern region is likely to face power shortage this summer (April, May, June) due to low hydropower supply.

Mai Van Khiem, head of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, made the statement at a recent conference on power supply this year.

He clarified that seven reservoirs in the northern region, namely Lai Chau (1,200 MW), Son La (2,400 MW), Hoa Binh (1,920 MW), Tuyen Quang (342 MW), Huoi Quang (520 MW), Ban Chat (220 MW), and Thac Ba (120 MW), may face issues if the water demand for power generation and agriculture is the same as the average in 2015-2024.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting would monitor the hot weather closely in May-June. Heavy rain is expected in Vietnam from June, starting in the northern region then moving to the central region in December, Khiem added.

The power supply in Vietnam, including domestic sources and imported power, is expected to grow 12.5% year-on-year to 347.5 billion kWh this year, the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam (ERAV) said at the event.
