Samsung factory in northern Vietnam flooded in super typhoon Yagi aftermath
A factory run by Samsung Industrial Vietnam Co. Ltd. in the northern Vietnam province of Bac Ninh to manufacture and assemble automotive parts has been flooded as super typhoon Yagi impacts linger.
Bac Ninh Vice Chairman Le Xuan Loi visited the factory at the Dai Dong Industrial Park Wednesday and directed measures to mitigate the situation.
Local officials have attributed the flooding to heavy rain, an overloaded sewage system and the factory's ground level being lower than the common area.
Loi asked local officials and the company to work together in dealing with the flow of the nearby Huc River and asked Dai Dong Industrial Park to improve the capacity of its pumping station.
He also suggested that Samsung Industrial Vietnam handle issues related to its sewage system and link it better with that of the industrial park.
Samsung entered Vietnam in 2008 with a mobile phone factory in the northern province of Bac Ninh and has since expanded its operations to Thai Nguyen, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
The tech giant operates numerous production sites in the country through Samsung Electronics Vietnam (SEV) and Samsung Electronics Vietnam Thai Nguyen (SEVT) for smartphones, Samsung Electronics HCMC CE Complex (SEHC) for TVs, and Samsung Display Vietnam (SDV) for display panels.
Also Wednesday, the Standing Committee of Bac Ninh Party Committee conducted its first regular meeting for September. One item on the agenda was SDV's plan to develop a new project at the Yen Phong Industrial Park.
In August, general director of Samsung Vietnam Choi Joo Ho said Samsung Vietnam owns six production facilities and one R&D center with total investment of $22.8 billion. It shipped $33.5 billion worth of products abroad during January-July, up 5% year-on-year.
Four Vietnamese subsidiaries of South Korean giant Samsung Electronics reported combined revenues of KRW42,017.3 billion ($31.38 billion) in the first half of 2024, up 8.6% year-on-year, but post-tax profits decreased 2% to KRW2,939.7 billion ($2.2 billion).
In its report, Samsung Electronics noted its affiliates in Vietnam beside the four major factories. Notable names include Samsung Hospitality Vietnam, Cheil Vietnam, S-1 Corporation, Samsung E&A Vietnam, Samsung SDS Vietnam, Welstory Vietnam, and Samsung C&T Corporation Vietnam. Samsung Industrial Vietnam was not in the list.
