Thai Binh 2 thermal power plant to operate in November
The 1,200 MW Thai Binh 2, one of the largest coal-fired power projects in northern Vietnam, is expected to see its first turbine operate commercially in November after a decade of delays.
Petrovietnam said it is striving to operate the first turbine commercially by the end of November and the entire power plant by end-2022.
Located in Thai Thuy district, Thai Binh province, the project is invested by the state-run group with investment capital of VND41,799 billion ($1.82 billion). It is a key part of the Thai Binh thermal power center.
Construction started in 2011, but faced continual suspensions and delays during 2018-2021, largely due to violations that have been brought to light.
PetroVietnam Construction JSC is the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor with a $1.2 billion contract.

Thanks to the government’s intervention, construction has resumed after being stalled since August 2018. Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh had made four working trips to the project site as of early April to boost its development.
The project is now 93% complete, and 85% of its investment capital has been disbursed. The remaining work involves commissioning and completion of its coal transport system.
