Thai Binh strain Vietnam’s best rice in 2022

The TBR39 rice variety grown by the Thai Binh Seed Corporation has won Vietnam’s Best Rice 2022 prize in the third edition of the competition.

This rice variety will represent Vietnam at the World’s Best Rice 2022 contest held in Thailand later this year.

The national competition was hosted by the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's (MARD) department of crop production, and the Agriculture Today newspaper.

It featured eight varieties of fragrant rice and four sticky rice varieties from six contestants. They were judged on their pre-cooked and cooked versions, with criteria including color, fragrance, smell, sweetness, stickiness and shape of the grain.

The runner-up and the third placed varieties were ST24 of the Ho Quang Tri Company and Loc Troi 28 of Loc Troi Group JSC.

Notably, ST24 had won the World’s Best Rice 2019. It will join the first prize winner in representing Vietnam at the global competition.

Thai Binh Seed also won the first prize for sticky rice with its A Sao variety and the third prize in the category with its TBR78 variety. The second place belonged to a variety produced by the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta Rice Research Institute.

Vietnam, a leading rice exporter, earned $2.94 billion from the export of 6.07 million tons of rice in the first 10 months of the year, up 7.4% and 17.2% year-on-ayear, respectively, according to the General Statistics Office.
