Tran Thanh Man elected Vietnam parliament chairman
Tran Thanh Man, a Politburo member and standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, has been elected the legislative body's Chairman.
With "yes" votes from 475 attending delegates, or 97.54% of the total, the National Assembly on Monday passed a resolution on Man’s election as Chairman of the legislature for the 2021-2026 tenure, following the Party Central Committee's nomination last Saturday.
The nomination followed the resignation of Vuong Dinh Hue on May 2.
Man, 62 (hometown: Chau Thanh district, Hau Giang province), holds a doctorate in economics. He is a Party Central Committee member for its 11th-13th tenures, Secretary of the 12th Party Central Committee, a member of the 13th Politburo - the country's highest decision making body, and a National Assembly member for the 13th-15th terms.
Before being elected Vice Chairman of the National Assembly in April 2021, Man was Chairman of the Can Tho city People's Committee, Secretary of the municipal Party Committee, and Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front.
National Assembly standing Vice Chairman Tran Thanh Man on May 2 was tasked with running the parliament until related personnel issues were settled, after Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue was dismissed from his position.
On April 26, the Party Central Committee accepted the resignation of Vuong Dinh Hue, a member of the Poliburo and chairman of the National Assembly. Hue also resigned from the Party Central Committee.
Reports from the Central Inspection Committee and other relevant agencies showed that Hue violated the Party members' code of conduct and regulations on the responsibility of cadres and Party members to set a good example.
His violations and shortcomings "caused bad public opinion, affecting the reputation of the Party, the State, and himself". Aware of his responsibility to the Party, the State and the people, Hue submitted his resignation, the committee stated.
The National Assembly currently has three vice chairmen: Nguyen Duc Hai, Nguyen Khac Dinh, and Tran Quang Phuong.
