US chipmaker Amkor eyes H2 production boost in Vietnam
U.S.-headquartered Amkor Technology Inc. plans to begin high-volume manufacturing at its Vietnam facility in the northern province of Bac Ninh from the second half of this year.
In its 2023 performance review, the chipmaker said the move will deliver advanced system-in-package (SiP) modules and other advanced packages with a cost-competitive solution, in line with its supply chain diversification.
Amkor Technology completed first phase construction of its Vietnam facility last year.
In 2023, Amkor recorded net sales of $6.5 billion, down 8% year-on-year, according to the firm’s financial report. Its net income halved to $360 million.
The firm’s 23.1 hectare-facility at the Yen Phong 2C Industrial Park in Bac Ninh was inaugurated in October 2023. Amkor has committed $1.6 billion for the project’s two phases, including $520 million in the first one to develop its most advanced facility, delivering next-generation semiconductor packaging capabilities.
Amkor's factory is the second semiconductor facility in northern Vietnam, following the first inaugurated last September by South Korea-invested Hana Micron Vina Co., Ltd in neighboring Bac Giang province.
