Vietnam auto sales down 2% in H1, up 12% in June

Members of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association (VAMA), not including VinFast and Hyundai, sold 134,884 units in the first half of 2024, down 2% year-on-year.

The total comprised 97,295 passenger cars, down 3% year-on-year; 36,441 commercial vehicles, up 2%; and 1,148 special-purpose vehicles, down 4%.

The number of completely knocked down (CKD) vehicles sold was 67,849, down 15% year-on-year; and that of completely-built-up (CBU) units was 67,035, a 16% growth.

June sales of 26,575 vehicles – 19,944 passenger cars, 6,419 commercial vehicles, and 212 special-purpose vehicles – was up 12% year-on-year and up 3% from the previous month. The numbers of CKD and CBU units sold in the month were 12,962 and 13,613, respectively.

Outside VAMA, Hyundai sold 24,381 units in the six-month period, according to a report by TC Group, manufacturer and official retailer of the South Korean brand’s vehicles in Vietnam. Its June sales figure was 5,047 units, up 2.7% from one month ago.

As a result, Hyundai was the best-selling brand in Vietnam in the first half of this year, followed by Toyota (22,338), Ford (17,651), Mitsubishi (14,622), KIA (14,007), Mazda (12,679), and Honda (10,481).

Vietnamese conglomerate Thaco, which manufactures and sells KIA, Mazda, Peugeot and BMW vehicles apart from its own Thaco trucks and buses, recorded total sales of 37,212 units in the period.

Ford Ranger, a pickup truck, was the best-selling model in June with 1,442 units; followed by Mazda CX-5, a sport utility vehicle (SUV), with 1,259; and Mitsubishi Xpander, a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), with 1,236.

Mitsubishi Xpander topped the January-June sales chart with 7,773 units; followed by Ford Ranger with 7,743; Mazda CX-5 with 5,270; and Hyundai Accent, a five-seater sedan, with 4,988.
