The 9th edition of the Hanoi Book Fair, which opened on the evening of September 27, is held to mark the 70th anniversary of the Capital Liberation Day (October 10, 1954) and the 25th anniversary of Hanoi’s recognition by UNESCO as a “City for Peace.”

The three-day fair, themed "Hanoi: The Cultural and Heroic Capital – the City for Peace," is taking place at the Hoan Kiem Lake pedestrian area in central Hanoi, attracting both locals and visitors alike.

Organized by the Hanoi People's Committee and the Ministry of Information and Communications, the event features around 250 booths of over 30 publishers and distributors from across the country, as well as international publishers with representative offices and publishing partners in Vietnam. It also sees participation of foreign embassies in Hanoi and representatives of various organizations, associations, and publishers worldwide.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Ha Minh Hai said that the book fair is not only a cultural event but also a bridge for knowledge, where each book carries stories, ideas, and knowledge that are shared widely.

With the theme "Hanoi: The Cultural and Heroic Capital - The City for Peace," this year’s event continues to affirm the important role of books in modern society, especially in the context of Hanoi's strong development and international integration, he stressed.

"Given the love for learning among Vietnamese people, particular those in Hanoi, we hope that the book fair will bring joy to readers and provide the best opportunities for everyone to access a rich source of knowledge that serves their lives, work, study, and research," Hai stated.

Despite challenges facing the publishing industry, including the impact of super typhoon Yagi on several Hanoi publishing houses, the fair organizers have launched a campaign calling on participating publishers, bookstores and readers to donate books to school libraries in rural districts of Hanoi severely affected by the floods.
